Dachshund Grooming in Trivandrum — Three Coats, One Spine to Protect
Dachshunds come in three coat types and one fragile spine. Wrong handling at the grooming table is one of the leading causes of disc injury in the breed. Neolokam grooms Dachshunds at home with breed-specific lifting technique, the right coat method for your variety, and nail care that actually protects the back.
The Three Dachshund Coats
Smooth Coat
Short, dense, glossy. Easiest to maintain — weekly brush with a rubber curry, monthly bath. Sheds steadily through Kerala humidity months. Watch for dry skin under heavy AC use.
Long-Haired
Silky feathering on chest, legs, ears, tail. Weekly slicker brush plus comb. Ear feathering needs special attention — mats fast in Kerala humidity. Light scissor trim every 6–8 weeks.
Wire-Haired
Coarse outer coat, soft undercoat. Should be hand-stripped (not clippered) every 6–8 weeks to keep texture and waterproofing. Clipping ruins the coat character — most salons get this wrong.
Inside a Dachshund Session
Two-handed lift, level spine
We support chest and hindquarters with both hands every time we move the dog. Spine kept level, never twisted. Owners are taught the same technique.
Low table, padded surface
Our portable grooming table is set up at chair height — no high-platform jumping. Padded with non-slip rubber mat for grip.
Coat-specific brushing
Smooth: rubber curry. Long: pin brush + slicker + comb. Wire: stripping knife. We never use the wrong tool for the variety.
Bath with mild shampoo
Lukewarm water, mild moisturising shampoo. Wire-coats use a tougher cleansing shampoo to lift dirt without softening the coat texture.
Full ear and eye check
Long-eared breeds — we check inside both ears for wax, redness or odour, and clean with vet-approved solution.
Nail trim every 3 weeks
We come every 3 weeks for nail-only visits if owners prefer. Long nails directly worsen Dachshund spine issues — non-negotiable for back health.
Paw-pad and sanitary trim
Hair between paw pads removed for grip on tile. Sanitary area cleaned and lightly trimmed for hygiene.
Coat finish + final check
Cool-air dry, post-bath brush, light coat oil for long-coats. Quick health scan — any new lumps, rashes or changes flagged to owner.
Dachshund Grooming FAQ
Why is nail length so critical for Dachshunds?
The Dachshund's long spine sits low to the floor. Long nails change foot angle, transferring stress up the legs and into the back — accelerating intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), the breed's most common health issue. We trim nails every 3 weeks to keep them short and smooth.
Do you handle Dachshunds differently because of their backs?
Yes. We never lift a Dachshund by the chest only — both hands, one supporting chest and one supporting hindquarters, keeping the spine level. We do not put them on a tall grooming table without secure restraint, and we do not allow jumping off. Owners are coached on safe handling at home.
What is the difference between smooth, long and wire coat grooming?
Smooth coats need short brushing and regular bathing — easy. Long coats need weekly brushing and trim of feathering — moderate. Wire coats need hand-stripping (not clippering) every 6–8 weeks to maintain texture and waterproofing — most demanding. We do all three.
My Dachshund has a back issue. Can he still be groomed?
Yes — with extra precaution. We bring a lower padded surface, work in shorter sessions with rest breaks, and avoid any twisting movement. If your vet has prescribed crate rest, we coordinate timing with the vet. We have groomed Dachshunds with active IVDD recoveries safely.
