Summer Grooming in Trivandrum — The Salon Won't Tell You The Truth

Walk into any Trivandrum pet salon in April and you'll be offered a "summer cut". It's the worst thing you can do to a Golden Retriever, Pomeranian, Husky or German Shepherd. Real summer grooming is about removing the loose undercoat — not the topcoat. Here's the actual job.

warningWhy "Summer Cut" is a Salon Myth

The double coat is two layers: a soft insulating undercoat that holds cool air close to the skin, and a coarse guard coat that reflects UV. Shaving removes the reflector. Sun hits skin directly. The undercoat — which was the main cooling agent — is removed.

The dog feels "cooler to touch" for the owner. The dog itself is hotter. We have boarded shaved Golden Retrievers and unshaved Golden Retrievers in the same Kerala summer — the unshaved ones panted less. Your eyes see "less fur = less hot". The thermometer disagrees.

What Real Summer Grooming Looks Like

Heavy deshed with force dryer

A high-velocity dryer pushes loose undercoat out from skin level. One session removes more shed than 30 brushings. Your home stays cleaner for 3 weeks; your dog runs cooler.

Undercoat rake & line comb

Rake-style comb works through dense undercoat zones — neck mane, hindquarter, tail base. We never use clipper blades on the body of a double-coat.

Sanitary trim (rear, belly, groin)

These zones trap heat and bacteria. Short scissor trim around the rear, belly and groin. Improves cleanliness, reduces hot-spot risk, doesn't damage coat structure.

Paw pad shave

Hair grows between paw pads and traps tar/sand/debris. We trim it flush — improves grip on tile floors, lets pads dissipate heat normally.

Ear pluck and antifungal ear flush

Kerala humidity = constant ear infection risk. Pluck inner-ear hair, clean with vet-approved solution, dry thoroughly. We catch yeast early — saves you a vet visit.

Cool-water bath, breed shampoo

Lukewarm to cool water (never cold-shock). Two lathers with breed-appropriate shampoo, full rinse. No medicated shampoo unless prescribed by your vet.

Belly & armpit air out

Underside fur traps moisture. A force-dryer 3-minute pass on belly and armpits ends the session — bone dry skin = zero fungal risk.

Coat health assessment

We photograph any unusual patches, scabs, or thinning and email you. Many summer skin issues are catchable in week 1 — by week 3 they're vet visits.

When Shaving Actually Is Appropriate

Single-coated breeds and a few medical situations — not the breeds Trivandrum salons shave most.

Single-coated breeds (yes, trim okay)

Poodle, Bichon, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Maltese — these have hair, not fur. Regular trim is essential and welcome in summer.

Severe matting

If a coat has felted to the skin (we see this often in monsoon-followed dogs), shaving is medical necessity. Mats trap moisture, cause hot spots, restrict skin circulation. Shave, treat skin, regrow.

Post-surgery / hot spot site

Localised shave around a hot spot or wound is standard veterinary practice. Not the same as a body shave.

Senior dog with hygiene issues

An incontinent senior may need a permanent sanitary shave for cleanliness. Belly only, never the back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I shave my dog in Kerala summer?

For double-coated breeds — Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Pomeranians, Huskies, Labradors — shaving is actually harmful in Kerala summer. The double coat is a natural insulation system: the undercoat traps cool air near the skin while the guard coat reflects UV radiation. Shaving removes that protection. The correct approach is a thorough deshed to remove the loose undercoat, not a body shave.

How often should I groom my dog in summer?

During Kerala's April–June peak summer, a deshed session every 4–6 weeks is ideal for double-coated breeds. Single-coated breeds like Poodles and Shih Tzus can follow their regular 6–8 week schedule. In addition to full sessions, a quick brush-out at home 2–3 times per week helps manage the increased seasonal shedding and keeps the coat airy.

What breeds should never be shaved in summer?

The following breeds should never be body-shaved in summer: Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Pomeranian, Husky, Malamute, Chow Chow, Border Collie, and Samoyed. These are all double-coated breeds whose coat structure provides active thermal regulation. Shaving them causes 'post-clipping alopecia' in some cases and always removes the coat's ability to insulate against heat.
