Shih Tzu Grooming in Trivandrum — Long Coat Done Without Stress
Shih Tzus are toy dogs with a hair-not-fur coat. They mat fast, tear-stain quickly and panic in unfamiliar salons. Neolokam grooms Shih Tzus inside your home — the calmest setting for a small breed — with full long-coat care, topknot styling and a face trim that keeps the eyes clear.
Why Shih Tzus Need a Different Grooming Approach
Unlike most breeds, Shih Tzus have hair, not fur. The implications are big.
Hair grows continuously
Without trimming, a Shih Tzu coat grows past the floor. The body coat needs scissor or clipper trimming every 4–6 weeks — there is no "natural" maintenance interval.
Single coat = no shedding pattern
Shih Tzus do not shed seasonally. Loose hair stays trapped in the coat and forms felt-like mats unless brushed daily and bathed regularly.
Shallow eye sockets need clearance
The face hair grows into the eyes and causes irritation. We trim a soft fringe and tie up a topknot to keep vision clear.
Tear staining is genetic
Most Shih Tzus develop reddish-brown tear marks. We clean during every session and teach owners daily wipe technique.
Underbite + dental crowding
Brachycephalic structure means food and saliva build up around the mouth. We clean the muzzle area carefully and recommend tooth-brushing routine.
Thin skin under heavy coat
Aggressive deshedding tools tear Shih Tzu skin. We use slicker brushes with rounded tips and soft-tooth combs only.
Heat-trap risk in Kerala
A full long coat traps heat. For Trivandrum summers (March–May) we recommend a 1-inch teddy-bear trim — not a full shave, which damages the coat.
Sanitary area maintenance
Long rear coat picks up faeces and urine. A weekly sanitary trim and wipe is essential — this is hygiene, not cosmetics.
Three Cut Styles We Offer
Show / Long Coat
Full body length kept, topknot tied, only sanitary and paw-pad trim. For owners willing to brush daily. Hardest to maintain in Kerala humidity.
Teddy-Bear Cut
2–3 inches body coat, rounded face, scissored legs. Most popular Trivandrum cut. Easy 6-week interval, manageable home brushing.
Puppy Cut / Summer Cut
Half-inch body, longer face fringe. Best for Trivandrum summer or senior dogs. Easiest maintenance — but no shorter than half inch.
Shih Tzu Grooming FAQ
How often does a Shih Tzu need grooming?
A full grooming every 4–6 weeks if you keep the long show coat, or every 6–8 weeks for a puppy cut. Daily brushing at home is non-negotiable for the long coat — Shih Tzus mat at the armpits, behind ears and around the rear within 48 hours of skipping brushing.
Why does my Shih Tzu have brown tear stains?
Shih Tzus have shallow eye sockets and short noses, causing tear overflow that oxidises into brown staining on the white coat. Daily wiping with vet-approved tear-stain solution, plus checking for blocked tear ducts and food allergies, controls it. We brief owners during every session.
Can you do a teddy-bear cut at home?
Yes. The teddy-bear cut keeps 2–3 inches of body coat with a rounded face. We do scissor work for the face and clipper-with-guard for the body. Most Trivandrum owners prefer this style — easier to maintain in Kerala humidity than a full show coat.
Do you charge extra for severely matted Shih Tzus?
Yes. A pelted coat takes 2–3x normal time and risks skin tears. We assess on arrival — if matting is severe, we recommend a one-time short shave-down to skin-safe length, then regrow with regular maintenance. We never force a brush-out on a heavily matted dog. That is painful and unnecessary.
