Kerala's Festival Season is Coming
Dog Boarding During Kerala Festivals
Kerala's festival calendar moves fast. Neolokam's cage-free farm stays are limited by design — responsible group management means capacity is finite. Every major festival window fills weeks before the festival. This page tells you exactly when to book.

The honest explanation
Why Festival Slots Fill Up Fast
This is not a marketing tactic. It is a structural reality of responsible cage-free boarding.
❌ Standard Boarding Kennels
- ✗Can scale to 50, 100, or more dogs
- ✗Each dog goes in an individual cage
- ✗Physical space is the only limit
- ✗No group management required
- ✗Festival slots usually available last minute
✅ Neolokam Cage-Free Boarding
- ✓Hard capacity limit — responsible group size
- ✓Dogs board in open, behaviour-matched groups
- ✓Every addition to a group is assessed
- ✓Too many dogs = unsafe group dynamics
- ✓Festival slots fill 6–8 weeks before the festival
The limitation is a feature, not a bug. A cage-free farm with 200 dogs is not cage-free — it is a kennel without the cages. Neolokam's capacity limit is what makes the boarding model work.
Plan ahead — book early
Kerala Festival Boarding Calendar
Festival-by-festival breakdown with typical stay lengths and booking lead times.
Onam
Onam is the single biggest demand spike of the year. Family travel is widespread, and Neolokam receives more booking requests during Onam than any other period. If you are travelling home to your native place or abroad, start the booking conversation at least 6–8 weeks before Thiruvonam. Waiting until two weeks out typically means a waitlist.
Vishu
Vishu falls on April 14 every year. While travel is shorter than Onam — most families stay within Kerala — it is a long weekend and boarding demand spikes sharply. 3–5 day stays are the norm. Book 4–5 weeks ahead. This period overlaps with summer heat, so the swimming pool at Neolokam becomes a major draw for boarding dogs.
Christmas & New Year
Kerala's Christian community (and increasingly all communities) travel extensively during the December holiday window. The 10-day stretch from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day sees sustained high demand. 7–10 day boarding stays are common. Book 5–6 weeks ahead — December is also peak tourist season in Trivandrum, which increases general travel volumes.
Summer School Holidays
Extended family holidays during school summer break produce the longest boarding stays of the year — 2–4 weeks for some families. This is also the warmest period, so the farm's shaded areas, swimming pool, and natural ventilation are at their most valuable. Start the conversation 6–8 weeks before you travel.
Bakrid / Eid ul-Adha
Bakrid sees significant family travel in Trivandrum's Muslim community. 3–5 day boarding stays are common. Because the date moves each year on the Hijri calendar, the booking window is shorter — 3–4 weeks ahead is usually sufficient, but check the year's calendar and plan accordingly.
Sabarimala Season
Sabarimala pilgrimages pull families away from Trivandrum across the November–January window. The specific travel dates depend on when vows are made, so this is harder to predict. The moment you know your pilgrimage travel dates, contact Neolokam to check availability. Don't wait for the “right time” — slots go fast.
The One Tip That Saves You Every Year
Right now — set a phone reminder for 8 weeks before Onam, 5 weeks before Vishu, and 6 weeks before Christmas. When the reminder fires, contact Neolokam. That single habit means you will never scramble for a festival boarding slot again.

Your questions answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does cage-free boarding fill up faster than regular kennels?
Responsible group management at a cage-free farm means you cannot scale capacity to 100 dogs. When every dog boards in open land with behaviour-based grouping, there is a hard limit on how many dogs can be safely managed at once. Neolokam's limit is intentional — it is what makes the boarding safe and effective. This is why festival slots disappear weeks before the festival itself.
Do annual members get priority during festival season?
Yes. Essential, Villager Elite, and Royal Resident membership holders get first access to festival-period booking slots before availability opens to walk-in clients. This is one of the core practical benefits of membership — not having to fight for spots during the 10 highest-demand days of the year.
What happens if I contact Neolokam last minute during a festival peak?
We maintain a waitlist for peak periods. There are no guarantees — if capacity is full, we cannot take additional dogs, regardless of urgency. The waitlist is managed in contact order. The best approach is to never need the waitlist: set a phone reminder 8 weeks before each major festival and contact us then.
Can my dog board for more than 10 days?
Yes. Long stays are handled at Neolokam — some dogs board for 2–4 weeks during summer school holidays. There is no upper limit on stay length. Extended stay rates and arrangements are discussed during booking. Membership plans include 30 boarding days per year, making extended holiday stays very cost-effective for annual members.
