Dog Kennel in Trivandrum — Why the Farm Beats the Cage

Most people searching for a 'dog kennel' in Trivandrum are looking for a safe place to leave their dog. A concrete kennel cage delivers the location but not the safety. Neolokam is the cage-free farm-boarding alternative — 1.5 open acres, behaviour-grouped, with home-cooked meals and daily updates.

warningWhy 'Kennel Cough' Is Called That

Bordetella bronchiseptica — kennel cough — spreads almost exclusively in close-confinement boarding environments where multiple dogs share air in small spaces. It is called 'kennel cough' for a reason. An open-air farm environment with proper spacing and ventilation dramatically reduces transmission risk.

We still require up-to-date Bordetella vaccination, because we are not immune to risk on an open farm. But our incident rate is a fraction of cage-based facilities because air moves, dogs aren't stacked, and we separate any dog showing symptoms immediately.

What Makes a Good 'Kennel' in 2026

The word 'kennel' has evolved. These are the criteria that modern dog owners in Trivandrum should apply.

Open space per dog

The minimum international standard is 4 sq metres per dog. Cage kennels rarely exceed this. Our farm provides acres.

Fresh air and natural light

Concrete kennel blocks have poor ventilation. Dogs on natural land breathe better, sleep better, and have lower cortisol.

Individualised care

A 'kennel' that feeds everyone the same kibble at the same time has not individualised anything. Ask specifically.

Behaviour assessment before intake

Any facility that accepts dogs without assessing temperament is mixing unknowns. This is where incidents start.

Transparent emergency protocol

A real kennel has a named vet, documented procedures, and will tell you who to call in an emergency. Ask for it in writing.

Trial visit policy

The trial visit protects your dog and the facility. Any kennel that skips it is cutting a corner that matters.

Dog Kennel FAQ — Trivandrum

Are there any actual 'kennel' facilities in Trivandrum I should know about?

We cannot list or review competitors here. What we can say: ask every facility you consider the 6 criteria above — trial visit, group assessment, vaccination check, emergency protocol, individual feeding, and visible facility. The ones that pass that checklist are worth considering regardless of the word 'kennel' or 'farm' in the name.

Is Neolokam registered as a kennel or a boarding facility?

Neolokam is registered as an animal care and boarding facility under Kerala regulations. We operate as a farm-based boarding centre, not a traditional kennel. Our registration, insurance, and operating standards are available to view on request. We welcome visits by anyone wanting to verify the facility before booking.

Can I bring my own crate for my dog to sleep in if he's crate-trained?

Yes. Many crate-trained dogs sleep better in their own crate in a new environment. Bring the crate — we place it in the appropriate rest zone within the farm. The farm time (walking, playing, socialising) is still cage-free; the sleeping arrangement follows your dog's existing preference.
