Mar–Aug Peak Season • Kerala Heat & Humidity = Tick Heaven

Tick & Flea Control in Kerala Summer — Win Before Monsoon Hits

Brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) explodes in Kerala from March to August. By the time monsoon arrives in June, an unprotected dog can be carrying 50+ ticks and the early signs of ehrlichiosis — which kills if missed. Treat the dog AND treat the environment. Most owners only do half the job.

Why Kerala is a Tick Capital

Year-round 25–35°C climate

The brown dog tick reproduces fastest at 28–32°C. Trivandrum is in this window 9 months a year. There is no real "off season" in Kerala — only a slowdown in December–January.

Humidity locks in tick population

Above 70% humidity, tick eggs survive and hatch reliably. A single fed female lays 3,000–5,000 eggs in cracks of compound walls, kennel walls, and behind tiles. Skipping environment treatment = endless reinfestation.

Apartment compound dogs share ticks

If the building's stray or another resident's dog has ticks, your treated dog will keep getting reinfested at the lift, the parking ramp, and the play area. Speak to neighbours; coordinate the month.

Travel-adjacent infestation

Boarding kennels, dog parks, beach trips, hill station vacations — all entry points. Always do a 5-minute tick check after any social outing.

Product Options — What Actually Works

Discuss specifics with your vet — these are the categories used in Trivandrum practice.

Oral monthly chews (isoxazoline class)

Brand examples: Bravecto, Nexgard. Single chew, 1–3 month coverage depending on product. Highly effective against ticks and fleas. Discuss with your vet — there are specific contraindications for dogs with seizure history. Most reliable single intervention.

Spot-on topicals

Brand examples: Frontline Plus, Advantix. Monthly. Apply on the back of the neck. Cheaper than chews but reduced efficacy in dogs that swim or are bathed often (which is most of Kerala summer).

Tick collars

Brand example: Seresto. 6–8 month protection. Useful for adult dogs. Not for puppies under 7 weeks. Good supplementary protection layered with environmental treatment.

Medicated shampoo and dips

Useful for active infestation knockdown — not as standalone monthly prevention. Use in conjunction with monthly oral or spot-on, never as the only intervention.

Environmental sprays (the missing piece)

Permethrin or fipronil-based environmental spray on cracks, kennel walls, balcony corners, sofa undersides. Repeat every 14 days during peak. Without this step, the dog gets reinfested from your home.

warningTick-Borne Diseases — Know These Names

  • Ehrlichiosis — most common in Kerala. Causes lethargy, low platelets, nose bleeds. Curable if caught early. Fatal if missed.
  • Babesiosis — destroys red blood cells. Pale gums, jaundice, dark urine. Vet emergency.
  • Anaplasmosis — joint pain, fever, lethargy. Often misread as "just slowing down in heat".
  • Lyme disease — rare in Kerala but possible. Joint swelling, lameness.

If your dog has had a tick load and shows lethargy, get a blood smear & CBC. Don't wait for "clearer" symptoms — by then platelet counts may already be dangerous.

Tick & Flea FAQ

I found one tick — should I worry?

One visible tick = many invisible nymphs in the same area. Treat it as confirmed infestation. Start the monthly product immediately, do a full body comb-through, treat the home environment, and repeat the comb-through in 7 days.

Can I use neem / turmeric / garlic for ticks?

These have mild repellent properties but no clinical efficacy against an active infestation. They're fine as a supplement to a real product — never as the only intervention. Garlic in larger doses is actually toxic to dogs.

Should boarding kennels treat ticks?

Yes — and you should ask. Neolokam requires every boarding dog to be on a current tick prevention. We also do twice-weekly walk-through environment treatment of the kennel and play areas. Open farmland with grass actually has lower tick load than tiled compounds because the ecosystem includes natural predators (birds, ants).
