Boarding is usually the best fit for trips of several days with a social dog, daycare for social dogs left alone on long workdays, and a pet sitter for dogs that need to stay in their own home, such as many seniors, dogs that struggle in new places and multi-pet households. The right choice depends less on price than on your dog's temperament, health and how long you will be away. This guide is for dog owners in Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram). It compares the three options on cost, supervision, socialisation and suitability for senior, anxious, reactive and puppy dogs, and ends with a decision checklist. Boarding prices for Neolokam are confirmed; daycare and pet sitting prices are not published here, so ask for a quote. Other figures are published ranges, labelled with their source and date.

Current package

3-Day Dog Village Vacation

₹5,555 for 3 days + 18% GST. A three-day, all-inclusive holiday for your dog, not just a boarding stay.

The three options in plain terms

  • •Boarding: your dog stays overnight at a facility, from one night to several months. Staff feed, walk, supervise and care for it, and some places group dogs for play.
  • •Daycare: your dog spends the day at a facility, usually with other dogs, and comes home in the evening. It is for workdays, not trips.
  • •Pet sitting: someone cares for your dog in your home. That can be drop-in visits for feeding, walks and company, or an overnight sitter who sleeps at your house.

Neolokam, a 1.5-acre cage-free dog farm east of Trivandrum city towards Kattakada, offers boarding, daycare and pet sitting, along with doorstep grooming, training, swimming and pickup and drop-off.

Cost bands

Prices below are either Neolokam's confirmed prices or published figures from pages we opened, with their dates. They are starting points, not quotes.

Boarding:

  • •Neolokam long-term boarding (confirmed): ₹444, ₹555 or ₹666 a day + 18% GST, depending on care needs and size.
  • •Neolokam monthly boarding (confirmed): ₹9,999 to ₹17,777 a month + GST.
  • •Neolokam 3-Day Dog Village Vacation (confirmed): ₹5,555 + GST, including meals, grooming, home pickup and drop, and videos.

  • •India-wide listed full-day daycare: ₹500 to ₹800, across five providers with published rates (price roundup, checked 11 October 2026).
  • •A daycare pricing guide estimates full-day bands for tier 2 cities of ₹300 to ₹400 budget, ₹500 to ₹700 standard and ₹800 to ₹1,200 premium. It labels these as estimates, not survey data (page updated 18 October 2026).
  • •Neolokam daycare: price not published; ask the team.

Pet sitting:

  • •One app-based provider listed ₹999 for up to 4 hours, ₹1,150 for up to 10 hours and ₹1,350 overnight (price roundup, checked 11 October 2026).
  • •Trivandrum sitting listings on a services directory and a pet-sitting marketplace showed no published prices when we opened them on 4 November 2026.
  • •Neolokam pet sitting: price not published; ask the team.

On cost per day for a long trip, boarding usually works out cheaper than an overnight sitter, because one facility cares for many dogs. Sitting buys you something different: your dog never leaves home.

Supervision: who is there, and when

This is the biggest practical difference, and it matters most for dogs that dislike being alone.

  • •Boarding: people are on site day and night at a well-run facility. At Neolokam, three dedicated Malayali staff are on site, with 24/7 human care.
  • •Daycare: supervised during opening hours, then home with you for the evening and night.
  • •Drop-in pet sitting: your dog is alone between visits, which may be several hours.
  • •Overnight pet sitting: a person sleeps in your home, so your dog has company at night, though the sitter may go out during the day.

The Merck Veterinary Manual describes separation anxiety as a dog panicking when left alone, with barking, pacing, house soiling or damage to doors and kennels, often most severe within the first 15 to 30 minutes. A dog like that may struggle with drop-in visits and do better with an overnight sitter, or with boarding where people are around. Our post on how long you can leave a dog alone covers this in more detail.

Socialisation and routine

  • •Boarding and daycare: dogs usually spend time with other dogs. Good places assess each dog first and group dogs by temperament. At Neolokam, every new dog has a prior visit, orientation and temperament assessment, and dogs are grouped by temperament with supervised time alongside compatible dogs.
  • •Pet sitting: no new dogs, and the home routine stays exactly the same: the same bed, the same smells, the same walk.

For a sociable young dog, group time is a big plus. For a dog that finds other dogs stressful, it is a minus, and home-based care may suit it better. Neither is right or wrong; it depends on the dog in front of you.

Which suits your dog?

Use these as starting points, then talk to the provider and your vet.

Senior dogs:

  • •Often best with a sitter at home, or calm boarding with soft bedding, shade and careful medication handling.
  • •Avoid busy, bouncy groups for frail or arthritic dogs.

Anxious dogs:

  • •Anxious about being alone: daycare by day, or boarding or an overnight sitter on trips, so people are around.
  • •Anxious in new places or around other dogs: a sitter at home is often kinder. Visit any facility first.
  • •Severe anxiety: see your vet before choosing.

Reactive dogs:

  • •Group daycare and cage-free group boarding are usually not suitable for dogs that react to other dogs.
  • •Neolokam is a cage-free group environment for social, friendly dogs that are comfortable around other dogs. Reactive dogs may not be accepted during busy periods, so mention any reactivity when you enquire; each dog is assessed and the team decides.
  • •A sitter at home avoids other dogs, and training and behaviour help can work on the underlying issue.

Puppies:

  • •Puppies need frequent meals, toilet breaks and gentle handling, which drop-in visits may not cover.
  • •The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends that puppy socialisation classes start from 7 to 8 weeks, with at least one set of vaccines given at least 7 days before the first class. Ask your vet when your puppy can safely mix with other dogs, and ask any facility about its puppy policy.

Multi-dog homes:

  • •A sitter keeps everyone together at home.
  • •Boarding several dogs together is possible; Neolokam's multi-dog monthly boarding is ₹8,888 per dog for two dogs and ₹7,777 per dog for three, + GST.

Requirements and practicalities

Each option asks something of you.

  • •Boarding at Neolokam requires a trial visit and temperament assessment; up-to-date rabies and core vaccinations with the record; current tick and parasite prevention as advised by your vet; and dogs must be comfortable around other dogs.
  • •Daycare usually has similar health and temperament requirements.
  • •A sitter needs keys, clear written instructions, your vet's contact details, and a plan for what happens if your dog is unwell.
  • •Pickup and drop-off for confirmed boarding and daycare at Neolokam are by appointment from Kollodu, Edathara, Malayinkil, Kattakkada, Nemom, Karamana, Balaramapuram, Neyyattinkara, Kovalam, Pattom, Kowdiar, Vellayambalam, Sasthamangalam, Kazhakkoottam, Technopark and Sreekaryam. Ask about charges.
  • •Whatever you choose, book early for festival and school-holiday dates.

Decision checklist

Screenshot this and answer each line honestly.

  • •How long will I be away: a workday, a few days, weeks or months?
  • •Does my dog enjoy other dogs, tolerate them, or avoid them?
  • •How does my dog cope in a new place?
  • •How does my dog cope when left alone for a few hours?
  • •Is my dog a senior, a young puppy, or on medication?
  • •Do I have more than one pet?
  • •Do I want my dog to stay in its own home?
  • •Which option fits my budget for the whole period, including GST and pickup?
  • •Have I visited the facility, or met the sitter, before booking?
  • •Does the provider have my vet's number and a written care note?

Mostly social, longer trip, people around at night: boarding. Social, long workdays: daycare. Needs home, routine or no other dogs: pet sitting.

Common questions

Is it better to board a dog or get a pet sitter?

It depends on the dog and the trip. Boarding suits social dogs on trips of several days, because trained people are around all day and night. A pet sitter suits dogs that cope badly with new places, seniors with strict routines and homes with several pets. If your dog panics when left alone, drop-in sitter visits may not be enough; consider an overnight sitter or boarding with staff on site.

Is dog daycare the same as boarding?

No. Daycare is daytime care only: your dog spends the day being supervised, often with other dogs, and comes home in the evening. Boarding means your dog stays overnight, for anything from a night to several months. Daycare suits social dogs left alone on long workdays; boarding suits travel, house moves and family events. Some places, including Neolokam, offer both.

How much does a pet sitter cost in India?

Published prices vary widely. An India-wide price roundup that checked rate cards on 11 October 2026 found one app-based provider charging ₹999 for up to 4 hours, ₹1,150 for up to 10 hours and ₹1,350 overnight. The Trivandrum sitting listings we opened on 4 November 2026 showed no prices. Neolokam offers pet sitting; ask the team for a quote for your dates and pets.

Is daycare good for an anxious dog?

Sometimes. A dog that is anxious only about being alone may enjoy company during the day, while a dog that is fearful of other dogs or of busy places is often more stressed in a group. Visit first, start with short days if possible, and watch for hiding, trembling, refusing food or coming home exhausted and jumpy. If anxiety is severe, talk to your vet before trying any group care.

What is the best option for a senior dog when I travel?

Many senior dogs do best with the fewest changes: a sitter at home, or boarding somewhere calm with soft bedding, shade and staff who handle medication carefully. Avoid busy, bouncy group settings for frail or arthritic dogs. Ask your vet for a written care note, including medication times and warning signs, and give it to whoever looks after your dog.

Bottom Line

Boarding, daycare and pet sitting each solve a different problem. Boarding covers trips with round-the-clock care, daycare covers long workdays, and pet sitting keeps a dog in its own home. Match the option to your dog's temperament and health first, then compare the full cost for your dates. Neolokam offers all three in Trivandrum; boarding prices are published above, and for daycare or pet sitting, call or WhatsApp +91 77363 90719 between 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM for a quote and to arrange a visit.
