Dog Spaying and Neutering in Trivandrum: Age, Cost, Recovery and Where to Go
November 2026 ā Neolokam, Trivandrum
Dog spaying (removing a female's ovaries and womb) and neutering (castrating a male) are routine operations done by vets across Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), at government veterinary hospitals and private clinics. We could not find a current published price for pet dogs in the city, so ask for an itemised quote. Vets usually suggest about 6 months for smaller dogs and later, once growth stops, for larger breeds.
This guide explains what the surgery involves, the age guidance vets use, what we could and could not verify on cost, where to go in Thiruvananthapuram, how to look after your dog at home in Kerala's heat and rain, and how Kerala's ABC programme for community dogs works. It is general education. Your vet should examine your dog and decide the timing and the procedure.

What spaying and neutering actually involve
Both are operations under general anaesthetic.
- ā¢Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) removes a female dog's ovaries and womb. She will no longer come into heat or have puppies.
- ā¢Neutering or castration removes a male dog's testicles.
PDSA, the UK veterinary charity, lists the main benefits. In females: no seasons, no unplanned litters, no womb infections (pyometra) or false pregnancies, and a lower risk of mammary problems. In males: no testicular cancer, fewer prostate problems later in life and less urge to roam after females.
There are downsides. Like any surgery, there is a small risk of complications. Neutered dogs need roughly 30 percent fewer calories, so weight gain is common unless food is adjusted. Neutering does not cure aggression, and in some nervous or fearful dogs it can make behaviour worse, so talk to your vet if behaviour is the main reason you are considering it.
What age? Go by your dog's size and your vet's advice
There is no single right age for every dog. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), in its 2019 Canine Life Stage Guidelines, divides dogs by their expected adult weight, with 45 lb (about 20 kg) as the dividing line:
- ā¢Smaller males (under about 20 kg as adults): castration at about 6 months.
- ā¢Smaller females: spaying before the expected first heat, at about 5 to 6 months.
- ā¢Larger males (about 20 kg or more): wait until growth stops, usually about 9 to 15 months.
- ā¢Larger females: about 5 to 15 months, chosen case by case.
Why the range for larger females? AAHA explains that spaying before the first heat lowers the risk of mammary tumours, while waiting until growth is complete may lower the risk of some joint problems, certain cancers and incontinence. The balance differs by breed, so decide with your vet.
PDSA adds that if a female has had a season, vets generally wait a few months after it. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Rottweilers, all common in Kerala homes, usually fall in the larger group.
Cost in Trivandrum: what we could and could not verify
We looked for a reliable, current price for spaying or neutering a pet dog in Thiruvananthapuram and could not find one.
- ā¢Government hospitals: the Animal Husbandry Department's Thiruvananthapuram page says service charges are set by departmental orders dated 11 May 2022 and 4 October 2023, but the amounts are not shown on the page. Ask the hospital for the current charge when you book.
- ā¢Community dog figures are not pet prices: Onmanorama reported in June 2025 that local bodies using the Kottayam ABC centre paid ā¹2,100 for each street dog sterilised there. That is what a local body pays for a programme, not what a pet owner pays a clinic.
- ā¢Private clinics: prices vary with sex, weight, age and what is included. We found no trustworthy published range for Trivandrum, so we are not quoting one.
To compare quotes fairly, ask what is included: blood test, anaesthesia, surgery, medicines to take home, a cone, check-ups and stitch removal. Spaying a female is a bigger operation than castrating a male and usually costs more. A heavier dog, an older dog or a female in heat may need more.
Government veterinary hospitals and private vets in Thiruvananthapuram
You have two broad options in the district.
- ā¢Government: the Multispeciality Veterinary Hospital at Kudappanakunnu, run by the Animal Husbandry Department, started in September 2018. The department describes it as Kerala's only multispeciality veterinary hospital, with three operation theatres and gas anaesthesia, performing 15 to 40 major surgeries a month. It works 24 hours a day; the listed phone number is 0471-2733344. The department also lists the veterinary polyclinics at Parassala and Nedumangad and the veterinary hospital at Attingal as working round the clock. Your local government veterinary hospital or dispensary can tell you whether it operates on pet dogs or will refer you.
- ā¢Private clinics: there are many across the city, from Pattom and Sasthamangalam to Kazhakootam and Neyyattinkara, often with more flexible appointments.
Whichever you choose, ask who operates, whether a blood test is done first and whom to phone that night if you are worried.
Before the day of surgery
- ā¢Book a check-up first, so the vet can examine your dog and plan the anaesthetic.
- ā¢Bring vaccinations and deworming up to date; our puppy vaccination schedule post explains a complete card.
- ā¢Fasting: PDSA advises the usual dinner the night before, no breakfast on the day, and water until 2 to 3 hours before, unless your vet says otherwise.
- ā¢Tell your vet if your dog has been unwell, is on any medicine or is in heat.
Recovery at home in Kerala heat and rain
PDSA's aftercare advice, adapted for a Kerala home:
- ā¢Rest: keep your dog calm for 7 to 10 days, with lead walks for toilet breaks only and no running, jumping or rough play.
- ā¢Cone or medical shirt: usually for 7 to 14 days, until the wound has healed. Licking can infect or open the wound. You can take the cone off at mealtimes if you watch your dog closely.
- ā¢Keep cool: a cone traps heat. Use the coolest room with a fan, and a water bowl wide enough to drink from in the cone.
- ā¢Keep the wound clean and dry: no bath, no swimming and no wading through puddles until your vet says so. In the monsoon, towel your dog's legs and belly after toilet trips and keep it away from mud.
- ā¢Check the wound a few times a day. Contact your vet for redness, swelling, bleeding, discharge or missing stitches. Do not apply creams, turmeric or home remedies unless your vet tells you to.
- ā¢Food: small, plain meals for 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your dog has not eaten for 24 hours, vomits, cannot stand or stays very dull.
- ā¢Check-ups: usually at 2 to 3 days and 7 to 10 days. Skin stitches, if used, typically come out 7 to 14 days after surgery.
After recovery, reduce food gradually as your vet advises, because neutered dogs need fewer calories.
Kerala's ABC programme for community dogs
Street dogs are managed by local bodies. Under Kerala's Panchayati Raj and Municipality Acts, local self-government institutions are responsible for the street dog population, The Week reported in July 2025. The method is Animal Birth Control (ABC): dogs are caught, sterilised, vaccinated against rabies and released at the same place.
- ā¢Thiruvananthapuram Corporation runs its ABC programme from ABC-ARV centres at Pettah and Vandithadam. Its portal reported 906 dogs sterilised in 2026 so far and 8,251 anti-rabies vaccinations since 2023 when we checked in November 2026. Treated dogs are ear-notched, so a notched ear on a street dog usually means it has already been through the programme.
- ā¢Statewide, The Week reported 15 ABC centres in July 2025, with mobile units planned.
- ā¢The Corporation's 24x7 help desk for stray dog reports is 94964 34488.
If you care for a community dog near your home, contact your local body about including it.
Boarding after surgery
Plan surgery so recovery finishes well before any trip. A fresh wound needs rest, a cone and close watching, not group play, swimming or a new place.
Neolokam, a dogs-only, cage-free boarding farm east of Trivandrum city towards Kattakada, asks for a trial visit and temperament assessment, up-to-date rabies and core vaccinations with the record, and current tick and parasite prevention as advised by your vet before a first stay. If your dog has had any recent surgery, tell the team when you enquire. The dog should come only after your vet has cleared it: the wound healed, any stitches out, the cone off and normal activity allowed.
Older dogs often need longer to recover from an anaesthetic, so allow extra time before a senior dog's stay.
Common questions
How much does dog spaying cost in Trivandrum?
We could not find a current published price for spaying a pet dog in Thiruvananthapuram, at government or private hospitals. Government service charges are set by Animal Husbandry Department orders, but the amounts are not shown on its website. Ask two or three vets for an itemised quote covering the pre-surgery blood test, anaesthesia, surgery, medicines, cone, check-ups and stitch removal, so you can compare like with like.
What is the best age to spay or neuter a dog?
The American Animal Hospital Association's 2019 guidelines go by expected adult weight. For dogs under about 20 kg (45 lb), they suggest around 6 months for males and before the first heat, about 5 to 6 months, for females. For larger dogs, they suggest waiting until growth stops: about 9 to 15 months for males and 5 to 15 months for females, decided with your vet.
Can a dog be spayed while she is in heat?
Vets generally prefer not to. PDSA, the UK veterinary charity, explains that spaying during a season carries more risk because the blood vessels around the womb are enlarged, and a false pregnancy can follow. It usually advises waiting two to three months after the season unless there is a medical reason to operate sooner. Your vet will tell you the right timing for your dog.
How long does a dog take to recover from spaying?
Most dogs feel brighter within a day or two, but the wound needs time. PDSA advises keeping the dog calm and on a lead for 7 to 10 days, with a cone or medical shirt to stop licking, usually for 7 to 14 days. Check-ups are typically at 2 to 3 days and 7 to 10 days. Skin stitches, if used, are usually removed 7 to 14 days after surgery.
Does Kerala sterilise street dogs for free?
Local bodies run Animal Birth Control (ABC) programmes for street dogs, which are caught, sterilised, vaccinated against rabies and returned to the same place. In Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, surgeries take place at the Pettah and Vandithadam ABC-ARV centres. These programmes are for community dogs, not pet dogs. For a pet, book the surgery with a government veterinary hospital or a private vet.
Can my dog go to boarding soon after spaying?
Only once your vet has cleared the dog. A healing wound needs rest, a cone and no swimming or rough play, which does not fit group play on open ground. At Neolokam, tell the team about any recent surgery when you book, and plan the stay for after the wound has healed, any stitches are out and your vet has said normal activity is fine.
Bottom Line
Spaying and neutering are routine surgeries, and the main decisions are timing and aftercare. Most vets suggest about 6 months for smaller dogs and waiting until growth stops for larger ones, guided by your vet. We could not verify a current price for pet dogs in Trivandrum, so ask for itemised quotes from the government hospital and one or two private vets.
At home, plan 7 to 10 days of rest in a cool room, keep the cone on and the wound dry, and call your vet if anything looks wrong. If boarding is coming up, book it for after your vet clears your dog, and tell Neolokam's team about the surgery on WhatsApp (+91 77363 90719).
