Does Vande Bharat Allow Pets? Dogs on Kerala's Vande Bharat and Other Trains
November 2026 — Neolokam, Trivandrum
No, Vande Bharat does not allow pets to travel with you on Kerala's routes. Both Vande Bharat trains from Thiruvananthapuram Central are chair-car trains, and Indian Railways' rules keep dogs out of AC chair car. A dog can ride with its owner only in a fully booked First AC coupe or cabin, or travel alone in a brake-van dog box, and neither exists on these trains.
Families in Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) planning a trip north to Kochi, Kozhikode or Mangaluru ask us this often. This guide explains which rule applies, what has been reported about the pet box on the newer Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, and how dogs actually travel by train from Kerala. Our wider guide to travelling with a dog from Trivandrum covers flights and road trips; this one sticks to the Vande Bharat question. Rules change, and official information is thin in places, so we mark clearly what we could and could not verify as of November 2026.

Kerala's Vande Bharat trains are chair-car only
Kerala has two Vande Bharat Express services, both starting or ending at Thiruvananthapuram Central:
- •Thiruvananthapuram Central to Kasaragod via Kottayam, the state's first Vande Bharat, running since April 2023.
- •Thiruvananthapuram Central to Mangaluru Central via Alappuzha, which began in September 2023 as a second Kasaragod service and was later extended to Mangaluru.
Both run AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car coaches. Oneindia's report on the September 2023 launch lists only those two classes and their fares. There is no First AC, no sleeper berth and no coupe on either train.
Train numbers for the Mangaluru service appear differently on different websites, so check the current number on the IRCTC app or NTES before you book.
Why the railway rules rule dogs out on these trains
Indian Railways' own luggage rules set out where a dog may travel. They say dogs are not allowed in AC sleeper coaches, AC chair car, sleeper class or second class compartments. Dogs may travel with their owners in First AC or First Class, and IRCTC's pet-booking terms add a key condition: the entire 4-berth cabin or 2-berth coupe must be allotted to one PNR.
The other option is the dog box, a small compartment in the guard's luggage-cum-brake van, where the dog travels without you. Vande Bharat trains are self-propelled trainsets with passenger coaches at both ends, and we found no report of a brake-van dog box on the chair-car versions.
So on a Kerala Vande Bharat, neither legal option exists. We could not find an official Indian Railways notice that names Vande Bharat specifically, but the general rules already settle the question for chair-car trains.
The puppy-in-a-basket exception, and why we would not rely on it
IRCTC's terms for online dog and cat booking include one line that often causes confusion: puppies and kittens small enough to be carried in a basket may travel with their owner in any class, after the usual booking charge is paid.
Read literally, that could include a chair car. In practice:
- •We found no official statement on how this applies to Vande Bharat trains.
- •A shared chair-car coach gives a puppy nowhere to settle for an 8-hour run, and fellow passengers may object.
- •Young puppies are usually still in their vaccination course, which is exactly when a crowded station and train are riskiest.
If you are thinking of trying it, ask the parcel office at Thiruvananthapuram Central first, get any luggage ticket they issue, and accept that staff on the day may say no. Do not board with an unbooked dog: the luggage rules charge six times the normal rate, with a minimum of Rs 50.
What about the Vande Bharat Sleeper pet box?
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is a different train. The first sleeper services started in 2026 outside Kerala, and news reports describe a pet box: a fixed metal enclosure at each end of the train, near the locomotive. Your dog rides there, not in your berth.
NewsMeter reported on 4 May 2026 that:
- •The pet box is booked in person at the parcel or luggage office of the departure station, not online, ideally at least three hours before departure.
- •You need a confirmed ticket; RAC and waitlisted tickets do not qualify.
- •A vet fitness certificate issued within 24 to 48 hours of travel is asked for.
- •The charge is about Rs 30 per kg of the dog's weight, with one pet per PNR.
The same report did not quote an official railway notice, and we could not find one. We also found no Vande Bharat Sleeper running from Thiruvananthapuram as of November 2026. If one starts, check the pet-box rules at the station rather than relying on any article, this one included.
How dogs do travel by train from Thiruvananthapuram
On ordinary Indian Railways trains, you have two routes.
- •First AC coupe or cabin. Book First AC for your journey and request the whole 2-berth coupe or 4-berth cabin for your PNR. IRCTC says requests can be made at the Divisional Railway Manager or General Manager office and are given due consideration, which is not a guarantee. After the first chart is prepared, book the dog on irctc.co.in under Trains, Dogs/Cats Booking. The luggage ticket arrives by email and SMS.
- •Brake-van dog box. The dog travels alone in a small compartment of the guard's van. You must be on the same train, and only some trains have one. Book at the parcel office. The box is not air-conditioned, which matters a great deal between March and May.
Charges are prepaid at luggage Scale L rates, minimum Rs 10, on a notional 30 kg for the dog box and 60 kg for a compartment. IRCTC says the freight is not refunded if you cancel or the train runs late. The luggage rules also require a collar and chain, and owners must bring their own food and water.
One detail few people notice: the rules cap the railway's liability for a dog at Rs 30 unless you declare a higher value and pay an extra percentage charge.
A checklist before you go to the parcel office
Visit the parcel office at Thiruvananthapuram Central a few days before you travel, with:
- •Your ticket or PNR, and the train number.
- •Your dog's vaccination card with a current rabies entry.
- •A recent fitness or health certificate from a registered vet. The railway rules page does not list one, but it is commonly asked for, so carry it.
- •Your dog's licence from your panchayat, municipality or corporation, as proof of ownership.
- •A collar, a chain or strong lead, a water bowl, water and food.
Ask whether the train has a dog box, which papers they will check and how early to report. If anything differs from what you read online, follow the parcel office.
When boarding is the better choice
Sometimes the honest answer is that the train is not worth it for the dog. Boarding or a sitter is usually kinder when:
- •The only way to take your dog is the brake-van dog box in hot weather.
- •You wanted the Vande Bharat for speed, and the dog-friendly alternative is a much slower train in a coupe you may not get.
- •The trip is two or three days, so the dog would spend a large share of it travelling.
- •Your dog is elderly, anxious, unwell or still finishing puppy vaccinations.
Neolokam is a dogs-only, cage-free boarding farm on 1.5 acres at Kollodu, near Malayinkil, east of Trivandrum city towards Kattakada. Dogs stay in supervised, temperament-matched groups with home-cooked meals, daily photo and video updates and 24/7 human care. A 3-Day Dog Village Vacation is Rs 5,555, and long-term boarding is Rs 444, Rs 555 or Rs 666 per day, all plus 18% GST.
Before the first stay there is a trial visit and temperament assessment, and your dog needs up-to-date rabies and core vaccinations with the record and current tick and parasite prevention as advised by your vet. Pickup and drop-off can be arranged by appointment from areas such as Pattom, Kowdiar, Kazhakkoottam, Technopark, Nemom and Kovalam; the team confirms the route, timing and any charge.
What we could and could not verify (November 2026)
Verified from official or major-publisher sources: the Indian Railways luggage rules and IRCTC's pet-booking terms quoted above, and the chair-car classes on Kerala's Vande Bharat services.
Reported but not officially confirmed: the Vande Bharat Sleeper pet box rules, from a May 2026 news report.
Not verified:
- •Any official statement naming Vande Bharat in the pet rules.
- •How staff treat a basket-carried puppy on a Vande Bharat chair car.
- •Any start date for a Vande Bharat Sleeper from Thiruvananthapuram.
Common questions
Does Vande Bharat allow pets?
Not with you on Kerala's Vande Bharat trains. Both services from Thiruvananthapuram Central run only AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car coaches, and Indian Railways' luggage rules do not allow dogs in AC chair car. Dogs can travel with an owner only in a fully booked First AC coupe or cabin, which these trains do not have. Reports say the newer Vande Bharat Sleeper trains have a separate pet box, but we found no sleeper running from Thiruvananthapuram.
Can I take a small puppy on Vande Bharat in a basket?
IRCTC's terms say puppies small enough to carry in a basket can travel with their owner in any class after paying the usual booking charge. We could not find any official note on how this is applied on Vande Bharat trains, and staff may refuse a dog in a chair car. Ask the parcel office at Thiruvananthapuram Central before you travel, and book the luggage ticket rather than boarding with an unbooked puppy.
What is the Vande Bharat Sleeper pet box?
News reports from 2026 describe a fixed metal pet enclosure at each end of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train, near the locomotive. The dog travels there, not with you. NewsMeter reported in May 2026 that it is booked in person at the parcel office with a confirmed ticket, a recent vet fitness certificate and one pet per PNR. We found no official Indian Railways notice setting out these rules, so confirm at the station.
How can I take my dog by train from Thiruvananthapuram?
There are two ways on ordinary Indian Railways trains. Your dog can travel with you in First AC if your PNR holds the whole 2-berth coupe or 4-berth cabin, booked online through IRCTC's Dogs/Cats Booking after the first chart. Or the dog can travel alone in the dog box of the guard's brake van, booked at the parcel office. Not every train has First AC or a dog box, so check your train first.
How much does it cost to take a dog on an Indian train?
Indian Railways charges dogs as luggage at Scale L rates, with a minimum of Rs 10. The charge is worked out on a notional 30 kg for the brake-van dog box and 60 kg for a passenger compartment, so the amount depends on distance. It is prepaid and, per IRCTC, not refunded if you cancel or the train is late. An unbooked dog found on board is charged six times the rate.
Is boarding better than taking my dog on the train?
Often, yes, for short trips and hot months. If the only option is a non-air-conditioned brake-van dog box, or the dog is old, anxious or a puppy still finishing vaccinations, a stay at home or in boarding is usually kinder. Neolokam's long-term boarding near Malayinkil costs Rs 444, Rs 555 or Rs 666 per day plus 18% GST, after a trial visit.
Bottom Line
Vande Bharat is not an option for travelling with your dog in Kerala: both trains from Thiruvananthapuram Central are chair-car only, and the railway rules keep dogs out of chair car. For a train journey, book a whole First AC coupe or cabin on another train, or use the brake-van dog box where there is one, and confirm everything at the parcel office. If the trip would be hard on your dog, message Neolokam on WhatsApp at +91 77363 90719 about boarding and pickup, and plan the trial visit before you travel.
