Pet-Friendly Resorts and Hotels in Kerala (2026): Checked Dog Policies, Fees and a Booking Checklist
November 2026 — Neolokam, Trivandrum

Pet-friendly resorts in Kerala exist, but they are the exception, and nearly every one that takes dogs sets rules: dogs only, a weight limit, a nightly fee, designated rooms and no dogs in restaurants or pools. As of November 2026, we confirmed published dog policies at Sterling Munnar and Sterling Wayanad, Taj Kumarakom and a Varkala North Cliff guesthouse, while several well-known Kochi hotels said pets are not allowed. This guide covers stays across Kerala, from the hills of Munnar and Wayanad to the backwaters of Alappuzha and Kumarakom, the beaches of Varkala and Kovalam, and Kochi. For places to take a dog within Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) itself, see our dog-friendly places guide. Every property named here was checked on its own website or its booking listing in November 2026. Policies change without notice, so confirm with the property before you book.

How we checked, and why you should check again
Many pet-friendly lists online are copied from old aggregator data and are wrong. We only name a property here if a page we opened in November 2026, either the hotel's own site or its live booking listing, stated its pet policy.
Even then, treat this as a starting point. A booking site can show a policy the front desk no longer follows, and pet-friendly rooms are often few. Before paying, message or call the property, give your dog's breed, weight and age, and ask them to confirm in writing.
Munnar: tea-country stays that take dogs
Sterling Munnar's booking listing sets out a clear dog policy as of November 2026:
- •Up to two dogs per room.
- •Only designated Privilege Suite rooms are allocated to guests with dogs.
- •₹2,000 plus tax per dog per night, charged at check-in.
- •Dogs must be trained, vaccinated and under 30 kg.
Sterling's own pet terms add more detail: only dogs are allowed, pets over 30 kg are not, you must declare the pet when booking and get prior approval, email a copy of the vaccination card before the trip and carry the original, and the dog must be free of ticks and infection. Dogs must be leashed in public areas and are not allowed in restaurants, bars, pools, the spa or the gym.
Hill tips: Munnar nights can be cold in December and January, so pack a blanket or a dog coat for short-coated dogs. Tea estates are working private land; keep your dog on a lead on estate roads. The ghat road up is long and winding, so if your dog gets car sick, speak to your vet well before the trip.
Wayanad: forest resorts and wildlife
Sterling Wayanad's booking listing shows the same dog policy as Munnar as of November 2026: up to two dogs under 30 kg, trained and vaccinated, in designated Privilege Suite rooms, at ₹2,000 plus tax per dog per night.
The same listing also states mandatory gala dinner charges on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Many Kerala resorts do this, so check for compulsory festive charges if you are travelling in late December.
Wayanad is forest country. Keep your dog on a lead at all times outside your room, avoid forest edges at dusk, and ask the resort which walks are permitted. Do not take a dog into a wildlife sanctuary or onto forest trails without explicit permission. In the monsoon, check your dog for ticks and leeches after every walk.
Alappuzha, Kumarakom and houseboats
Taj Kumarakom Resort & Spa, on Vembanad Lake, says on its own website that it is pet-friendly and asks guests to call before arrival so arrangements can be made. The official page does not publish a fee, and third-party listings disagree on the amount, so ask for the current charge when you call.
Houseboats are harder. Many Alleppey houseboat listings either say no pets or say nothing at all. If you want to try:
- •Book a private boat, never a shared one, and ask the operator directly.
- •Check that the deck has railings and shade, and how your dog will board from the jetty.
- •Ask whether your dog can stay in the cabin and where it can toilet during a long cruise.
- •Consider a day cruise from a pet-friendly base on land rather than an overnight.
A dog that is nervous around water or engines will not enjoy a houseboat. That is a good case for leaving the dog in care for a day or two.
Kochi: plan for a no
Kochi was the hardest city we checked. Taj Malabar Resort & Spa on Willingdon Island states on its own website that it is not a pet-friendly hotel, and several Fort Kochi heritage hotels we looked up on Booking.com list pets as not allowed.
If you are passing through Kochi with a dog, for example after collecting a dog that has arrived from the Gulf, look for serviced apartments or homestays that state a pet policy, and confirm in writing before you arrive. Our travel guide explains why Kochi airport matters for dogs flying into Kerala.
Varkala and Kovalam: beach stays
In Varkala, Kulture KonnectT on North Cliff states on its Booking.com listing that pets are allowed on request and that charges may apply. Several other cliff-area guesthouses appear under Booking.com's pet filter for Varkala; confirm each one individually.
Beach and cliff tips:
- •The cliff paths have long unfenced drops. Keep your dog on a short lead, not a long or retractable one.
- •Sand gets hot quickly. Use the beach in the early morning or after sunset only.
- •Do not let your dog drink sea water, and rinse salt and sand off afterwards.
- •Waves and currents along the Kerala coast can be strong; avoid letting your dog swim in the sea.
- •Beaches are shared with fishermen, families and free-roaming community dogs, so keep control at all times.
For Kovalam and stays within Trivandrum, our dog-friendly places in Trivandrum guide lists hotels with published pet policies and beach tips for the city.
Pet-friendly Airbnb and homestays near Trivandrum
Homestays and holiday rentals are often more flexible than hotels, because the owner decides. Use the pets filter on the booking platform, then:
- •Read the house rules in full; pet-friendly sometimes means small dogs only.
- •Message the host with your dog's breed, weight, age and temperament.
- •Ask whether the host has dogs of their own, and whether the compound is fully walled and gated.
- •Ask whether your dog may be left alone in the house, and whether it can go on beds or sofas.
- •Ask about any pet fee, cleaning fee or deposit.
- •Keep the host's confirmation in the platform's messages, not on a phone call.
A 10-point checklist before you book any stay
Screenshot this and ask every property the same questions:
- •Are dogs allowed, and is that in writing?
- •Is there a weight, size, breed or number limit?
- •What is the pet fee, and is it per night or per stay, plus tax?
- •Are there cleaning fees, deposits or compulsory festive charges?
- •Which rooms are pet-friendly, and how many are there?
- •Where can the dog go: lawns, verandas, pool areas, restaurant?
- •Can the dog ever be left alone in the room?
- •What documents do they need, and must they be sent in advance?
- •Is there a vet nearby, and what is the number?
- •What happens if the dog barks at night or another guest complains?
What to pack for a Kerala trip with a dog
- •Vaccination card (original plus a photo on your phone) and dog licence.
- •Tick prevention applied as your vet advises before you leave.
- •Collar with an ID tag showing your phone number, plus a spare leash.
- •Your dog's usual food for the whole trip plus two extra days; avoid switching food while travelling.
- •Water and a travel bowl for the drive.
- •Your dog's own blanket or bed, which also protects the resort's furniture.
- •Poop bags, old towels and a lint roller.
- •A cooling mat for the plains and a coat or blanket for the hills.
- •Any medicines prescribed by your vet, with written instructions.
- •The number of a vet near your destination.
Heat and the drive
Most Kerala trips start with a long drive. Travel early in the morning, stop every couple of hours for water and a short walk on a lead, and never leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows down. Kerala's heat and humidity can cause heatstroke quickly, especially in flat-faced breeds and heavy-coated dogs. If your dog pants heavily, drools excessively, stumbles or vomits, cool it with water and go to a vet now.
When the stay is not pet-friendly
Sometimes the right resort, the family wedding or the houseboat simply does not take dogs, or your dog would be stressed by the trip. Then the kinder option is care at home or a boarding stay.
Neolokam is a dogs-only, cage-free farm east of Trivandrum city, towards Kattakada, with three dedicated Malayali staff on site, 24/7 human care, home-cooked meals and daily photo and video updates. The 3-Day Dog Village Vacation is ₹5,555 plus GST and includes meals, grooming, home pickup and drop, and videos, which suits a long weekend in Munnar or Varkala. Longer trips can use long-term boarding from ₹444 a day plus GST.
A first stay needs a trial visit and temperament assessment, up-to-date rabies and core vaccinations with the record, current tick and parasite prevention as advised by your vet, and a dog that is comfortable around other dogs. Book the trial visit before you book the trip.
Common questions
Are there pet friendly resorts in Kerala?
Yes, but they are a minority and almost all set conditions. As of November 2026, Sterling Munnar and Sterling Wayanad list a dog policy of up to two dogs under 30 kg in designated rooms at ₹2,000 plus tax per dog per night, and Taj Kumarakom says it is pet-friendly if you call ahead. Several large Kochi hotels said no. Always confirm with the property before booking.
Which pet friendly hotels are near Trivandrum?
Varkala, up the coast north of the city, has guesthouses that accept pets on request, and Kovalam and the city have a few hotels with published pet policies, which our dog-friendly places in Trivandrum guide covers. Policies change, so message the property with your dog's size and breed and get the answer in writing before you pay.
Can I take my dog on an Alleppey houseboat?
Sometimes, but do not assume it. Many houseboat listings say no pets or say nothing at all. If you try, book a private boat rather than a shared one, ask the operator directly, and check railings, deck shade and how your dog will get on and off. A dog that panics near water is safer staying on land or boarding while you cruise.
How much do pet friendly hotels in Kerala charge for a dog?
The clearest published example we found is ₹2,000 plus tax per dog per night at Sterling Munnar and Sterling Wayanad. Many smaller stays say charges may apply on request. Also ask about cleaning fees, damage deposits and festive dinner charges around Christmas and New Year, which some resorts make mandatory for every guest.
What documents do resorts ask for when you bring a dog?
Expect to show the vaccination card. Sterling's pet terms, for example, ask guests to email a copy of the vaccination record before the trip, carry the original, and confirm the dog is free of ticks and infections. Carry your dog licence, tick prevention dates and your vet's number as well, and keep photos of everything on your phone.
Bottom Line
Kerala has pet-friendly resorts in Munnar, Wayanad, Kumarakom and Varkala, but each sets its own rules and fees, and many well-known hotels say no. Check every policy in writing, pack the vaccination card, and plan for heat on the drive. If your dog cannot come along, call or WhatsApp Neolokam on +91 77363 90719 to arrange a trial visit before your trip.
