Deshedding is part of the groom, not an add-on

Some salons sell 'deshedding' as a separate treatment. Neolokam does not. Removing loose undercoat is built into the complete groom for any dog that sheds:

  • Brushing and combing before the bath, to pull out as much dead coat as possible while it is dry.
  • A shampoo bath and rinse, which loosen more undercoat.
  • A full blow-dry, which pushes out loose hair that brushing missed and dries the coat right to the skin.
  • A final brush-out and finish.

The groom also includes nail cutting, ear cleaning, hygiene and paw-pad trimming and light scissor shaping. There is no published deshedding-only or bath-only price. If you only want part of the groom, ask on WhatsApp and the team will tell you what they can do.

Which dogs shed most in Kerala

Heavy shedding is mostly a double-coat problem. A double coat has a soft undercoat under a longer outer coat, and the undercoat is what drifts across the floor. The breeds Trivandrum owners most often struggle with are:

  • Labrador Retrievers: short coat, but a dense undercoat that sheds through the year.
  • Golden Retrievers: undercoat plus feathering that mats easily in humidity.
  • German Shepherds: year-round shedding with heavy coat blows.
  • Siberian Huskies: a very thick undercoat that comes out in clumps.
  • Pomeranians and Spitz-type dogs: fluffy double coats that need regular care.

Many of these dogs seem to shed constantly in Trivandrum rather than in two neat seasons, because there is no real cold season to set the cycle. Short-coated dogs such as Beagles and Pugs shed more than people expect, too; the hairs are short and stubborn, and regular brushing with a rubber brush keeps them under control.

Normal shedding, or something to show the vet

Normal shedding is even: loose hair everywhere, but the coat underneath looks full and the skin looks healthy. Some signs point to a problem a groom will not fix:

  • Bald patches, thinning in one area or a moth-eaten look.
  • Red, scaly, scabby or greasy skin, or a strong smell.
  • Constant scratching, licking or chewing.
  • Ticks or fleas, which are common in Kerala's semi-rural areas.
  • Sudden heavy loss in a dog that did not shed much before.

These can come from parasites, allergies, infections or other health issues, and need your vet. Tell the team about any skin problem before booking. A medicated bath for skin issues is ₹2,200 plus GST, and contagious conditions need vet clearance before any groom. If you have seen ticks, give a vet-recommended tick treatment before the visit.

Why shaving does not stop shedding

Shaving a double-coated dog does not stop it shedding. The coat grows back and keeps shedding, only now in short, prickly hairs. Shaving also removes the coat's protection against sun and insects, and some double coats grow back patchy or with a changed texture.

The one time a full shave makes sense is when the coat is so matted that brushing it out would hurt. That is priced at ₹2,000 plus GST, and the team will explain why before they start.

What you can do between visits

A good groom gives you a clean slate. Keeping the shedding manageable after that is mostly about a few minutes of brushing, often.

  • Brush two or three times a week, and daily when your dog is dropping coat. An undercoat rake or a slicker brush suits most double coats; a rubber curry brush suits short coats like a Lab's.
  • Brush outdoors or on the verandah, so the loose coat does not end up in the house.
  • Dry your dog properly after rain or a swim. A damp undercoat in humid weather can lead to itching and skin trouble.
  • Do not over-bathe. Most dogs do well with a bath about once a month, adjusted to their skin, coat and your vet's advice.
  • Feed a complete, balanced diet, and ask your vet before adding supplements for the coat.
  • Keep up the tick and parasite prevention your vet recommends.

Questions people ask

How much does dog deshedding cost in Trivandrum?

Neolokam includes undercoat removal in its complete doorstep groom: ₹1,700 for most dogs and ₹2,200 for large or heavy-coated breeds such as Huskies, plus 18% GST. Two groomers bring all equipment and travel is included. There is no separate deshedding-only price; ask on WhatsApp if you only want part of the groom.

Is there dog deshedding near me in Trivandrum?

Neolokam's groomers come to your home in Trivandrum by scooter, so heavy-coated dogs do not need a car trip. Share your area, your dog's breed and a coat photo when you book, and the team confirms the area is covered, the price category and a visit time. Standalone grooming is never done at the farm.

Why is my dog shedding so much in Kerala?

Double-coated breeds such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Huskies shed a lot, and in Kerala's warm, humid climate many shed steadily all year rather than in two seasons. If shedding comes with bald patches, red or scaly skin, itching or a smell, see your vet, because parasites, allergies or infection may be involved.

Will shaving my dog stop the shedding?

No. A shaved double-coated dog still sheds, only in shorter hairs, and loses the coat's protection from sun and insects. Some double coats grow back patchy or with a different texture. Regular brushing and a groom that removes the loose undercoat work better. A full shave is only the kindest option for badly matted coats.

How can I reduce my dog's shedding at home?

Brush two or three times a week, and daily while your dog is dropping coat, using an undercoat rake or slicker brush for double coats. Dry your dog properly after rain or swims, avoid over-bathing, feed a balanced diet and keep up the parasite prevention your vet recommends. Brushing will not stop healthy shedding, but it keeps the hair off your floor.

How often should a heavy shedder be groomed?

Most dogs do well with a bath about once a month, adjusted to their skin, coat and your vet's advice. For heavy shedders, the most useful time to book a professional groom is when shedding peaks, because that is when the most loose undercoat can be removed. Brushing at home between grooms keeps the coat from matting.
