Why Labradors shed so much in Kerala
A Labrador has a short, dense double coat: a soft undercoat close to the skin and a harder, water-resistant top coat. The undercoat is what ends up on your floor, sofa and school uniforms. Breed clubs describe Labs as shedding through the year, with heavier sheds once or twice a year.
In Trivandrum, many owners notice that the shedding never really stops. Warm, humid weather, fans running all day and frequent rain baths keep the coat turning over. Shaving is not the answer. The double coat protects a Lab's skin from sun and insects, and a shaved Lab coat can grow back patchy. The fix is removing the loose undercoat properly, then keeping up with it between visits.
What a Labrador groom covers
A Lab does not need a fancy haircut, so most of the work is coat, skin, ears and nails. The complete groom includes:
- Brushing and combing out loose undercoat before the bath, and again after drying.
- A shampoo bath that reaches the skin, not just the top coat.
- A full blow-dry. This matters for Labs: a damp undercoat left to air-dry in Kerala humidity can sit against the skin for hours and invite itching and hot spots.
- Ear cleaning. Lab ears hang down and trap moisture, which is why ear trouble is common in the breed, especially in dogs that swim or play in rain.
- Nail cutting and paw-pad trimming, which help a heavy dog grip tiled floors.
- Hygiene trimming and a light tidy of the tail and belly.
The team brings shampoo, tools and products. You provide accessible water, one bucket and a raised, non-slip area such as a sturdy table on the sit-out with a rubber mat.
Ears, skin and the monsoon
Labradors love water, and in Kerala that means ponds, puddles, the beach and every downpour. Wet ears and a wet undercoat are the two things to watch.
- After a swim or a soaking, dry the ears gently with a soft cloth and towel the coat down to the skin.
- Look inside the ears once a week. A sour smell, redness, brown discharge or constant head shaking needs your vet, not a groomer.
- Check the skin along the back, base of the tail and under the collar for red, moist patches.
If your Lab already has a skin problem, tell the team before booking. A medicated bath for skin issues is ₹2,200 plus GST, and contagious conditions need vet clearance before any groom. If you have seen ticks, give a vet-recommended tick treatment before the visit.
Choosing a groomer for a Labrador
People search for the best groomer near them for Labradors, and the honest answer is that a good Lab groom is about patience and drying, not styling. Whoever you book, ask:
- Will they shave the coat? For a healthy Lab the answer should be no.
- How will they dry it? Towel-only drying leaves the undercoat damp.
- Do they clean ears, and will they tell you if something looks wrong?
- How do they handle a strong, wriggly 30-kilo dog? Neolokam always sends two groomers, so one can hold and reassure while the other works.
Most dogs do well with a bath about once a month, adjusted to their skin, coat and your vet's advice. Labs that swim a lot or have sensitive skin may need a different rhythm; the team can suggest one after the first groom.
Between grooms
A Lab's coat is easy to keep on top of if you do a little often. Brush two or three times a week with a rubber curry brush or a short-toothed undercoat rake, and daily when the shedding peaks. Wipe paws after walks in wet weather. Keep nails short enough that you do not hear them clicking on the floor. Do not bathe at home every week with human shampoo; it can dry out the skin and make shedding worse.
If your Lab is boarding at the farm, it is groomed during its stay, so you do not need a separate home visit before pickup.

How much does Labrador grooming cost in Trivandrum?
At Neolokam, most Labradors are groomed with the ₹1,700 complete groom, plus 18% GST, done at your home with travel included. Very large or unusually thick-coated Labs may fall in the ₹2,200 heavy-coat category, and a medicated bath for skin issues is also ₹2,200. Send a coat photo on WhatsApp and the team confirms the price.
Should I shave my Labrador in Kerala summer?
No, not a healthy Lab. The short double coat protects the skin from sun and insects, and shaving can leave it growing back patchy. Removing the loose undercoat with brushing, a bath and a thorough blow-dry helps far more. A shave is only worth considering if a coat is badly matted, which is rare in Labs.
How often should a Labrador be groomed?
Most dogs do well with a bath about once a month, adjusted to their skin, coat and your vet's advice. Labs that swim often or have sensitive skin may need a different schedule. Between grooms, brush two or three times a week and every day during heavy shedding, and dry ears after swims or rain.
Why does my Labrador keep getting ear infections?
Labrador ears hang down and trap moisture, and Kerala's humidity, rain and swimming make that worse. Dry the ears gently after your dog gets wet and look inside them weekly. Ear cleaning is part of every Neolokam groom, but a sour smell, redness, discharge or head shaking needs a vet to examine the ear and treat it.
Do you groom Labradors at home or at the farm?
At home only. Standalone grooming is never done at the Neolokam farm, to reduce the risk of spreading skin disease between dogs. Two groomers come by scooter with all equipment and products. You provide accessible water, one bucket and a raised, non-slip area. Dogs already boarding at the farm are groomed during their stay.
Can you do just a bath or nail cut for my Lab?
Neolokam publishes one price for the complete groom, which includes nails, ears, brushing, bath, hygiene and paw-pad trim, shaping, blow-dry and finish. There is no published bath-only or nail-only price. If you only want one part done, message the team on WhatsApp with your area and your dog's details and ask.
