Before the first groom: talk to your vet
The most common question about puppy grooming is how old a puppy has to be. Neolokam does not set a single minimum age, because the real question is whether your puppy is protected and healthy enough, and that is your vet's call.
At your puppy's next vaccination appointment, ask the vet:
- Whether the vaccination course is far enough along for a visit from groomers who work in other homes.
- When your puppy can safely have a full shampoo bath.
- Which tick and parasite prevention suits your puppy's age and weight. If your puppy has ticks, give a vet-recommended treatment before the groom.
Keep the vaccination record handy and tell the team your puppy's age, breed and vaccination status when you book. If the vet has any doubts, wait a few weeks. Our puppy vaccination guide for Kerala lays out the usual schedule.
Getting your puppy used to being handled
A puppy that is used to being touched all over will find its first groom far easier. A few minutes a day, in a quiet moment, is enough:
- Paws: hold each foot, gently press each toe and touch the nails. Reward with a tiny treat.
- Ears: lift each ear flap and look inside, then reward.
- Face, tail and belly: touch around the eyes and muzzle, then run your hand along the tail and under the belly.
- Brushing: use a soft brush for a few strokes at a time.
- Standing up high: the groom happens on a raised, non-slip area, so let your puppy stand on a sturdy table with a rubber mat while you keep a hand on it.
- Noise: let your puppy hear a hair dryer running from across the room while it eats or plays.
Stop before your puppy gets wriggly or worried, and finish on something it enjoyed. Our puppy socialisation checklist for Kerala has more ideas for the first months.
What happens on the first groom
Two groomers come to your home by scooter with all the equipment and products. You provide water within reach, one bucket and the raised, non-slip area your puppy has been practising on.
The groom covers the same steps as for an adult dog: nail cutting, ear cleaning, brushing and combing, a shampoo bath, hygiene and paw-pad trimming, scissor shaping of the head, belly and tail, and a blow-dry and finish. On most puppy coats the scissor work is light, more about tidying the face and feet than changing the shape.
Tell the team when you book if your puppy is nervous about anything in particular, such as having its feet touched or the sound of the dryer. Being there yourself often helps a young puppy settle.
A puppy coat changes as it grows
The coat your puppy has at three months is often not the coat it will have as an adult. Many breeds go through a change somewhere in the first year or so, and the grooming needs change with it.
- Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos and similar breeds grow a longer, denser coat that tangles far more easily, so regular brushing and grooms become important.
- Pomeranians, Indian Spitz and other double-coated breeds can look patchy or fluffy while the adult coat comes in, and then shed heavily. Do not shave them; their adult double coat protects the skin.
- Huskies and similar heavy coats move into the ₹2,200 large or heavy-coated category once the adult coat is in.
Starting grooms early, before the adult coat arrives, means your dog already accepts the routine when grooming starts to matter most.
Between grooms: the home routine
Most of a puppy's grooming happens at home, in small amounts:
- Brush long-coated puppies daily and short coats weekly.
- Wipe around the eyes with a damp cloth if your puppy's breed tends to collect tear marks.
- Look inside the ears weekly; redness, smell or heavy wax is a reason to see your vet.
- Wipe and dry the paws after walks, especially in the monsoon, and check between the toes for ticks.
- Do not bathe too often. Most dogs do well with a bath about once a month, adjusted to their skin, coat and your vet's advice. Use a puppy or dog shampoo and dry your puppy fully afterwards.
If your puppy is boarding with Neolokam, it can be groomed during the stay. Our guide to bathing a dog at home covers washing and drying step by step.

How much does puppy grooming cost in Trivandrum?
Neolokam grooms puppies with the same complete doorstep groom as adult dogs. The regular complete groom is ₹1,700 plus 18% GST and includes a bath, blow-dry, nail cutting, ear cleaning and trims. Large or heavy-coated breeds are ₹2,200 plus GST. Travel, two groomers and all products are included, and the team confirms the category when you book.
At what age can a puppy have its first groom?
Neolokam does not set a single minimum age. What matters is whether your puppy's vaccinations are far enough along and whether it is healthy enough for a full bath, which your vet should decide. Ask at your next vaccination appointment, then tell the team your puppy's age, breed and vaccination status when you book.
Does my puppy need vaccinations before a home groom?
Check with your vet before the first groom. Groomers visit many homes, so your vet should confirm that your puppy's vaccination course is far enough along. Keep the vaccination record ready, and give a vet-recommended tick and parasite treatment if your vet advises it. If your vet has doubts, waiting a few weeks is the safer choice.
How can I prepare my puppy for its first grooming session?
Spend a few minutes a day handling its paws, ears, face, tail and belly, rewarding it with tiny treats. Brush it gently, let it stand on a raised table with a rubber mat while you hold it, and let it hear a hair dryer from across the room. Short, calm sessions that end well work better than long ones.
Can I bathe my puppy at home between grooms?
Yes, once your vet is happy for your puppy to be bathed. Use a puppy or dog shampoo, lukewarm water and keep water out of the ears and eyes. Rinse well and dry your puppy fully, because a damp coat in Kerala's humidity can lead to skin trouble. Most dogs do well with a bath about once a month.
Can I bring my puppy to your farm to be groomed?
No. Neolokam's standalone grooming happens only at your home, never at the farm, to reduce the risk of skin disease spreading between dogs. For a puppy that is still finishing its vaccinations, staying home is also gentler. Puppies that are already boarding with Neolokam can be groomed during their stay.
